The Big "M" Covered Bridge
The covered bridge is located to the south of the mill structure. It was designed by the first generation miller Neal H. Cook. The Village Lattice-style bridge was patterned after and built in memory of the bridge that once crossed the Thornapple River in Middleville, Michigan. It is about one-third size. It was built in 1982.
We needed a way to get to the other side of the creek where we would one day recreate the water wheel that was on the end of The Old Mill many years ago. As we were tossing ideas around about how should it be, just a common bridge, a hump back or maybe a covered bridge. We decided on a covered bridge.
It was named ‘The Big M’ bridge, the reason being: It crossed the old Mill Stream, much of the lumber was from the French Mill in Middleville and was donated by Mike and the first millers wife's name is Marion. What else could we name it?
The awesome beauty of the 17 foot water wheel and the 1864 Grist Mill can now be viewed from that covered bridge. There are beautiful huge walnut trees that cast shade on the restful green grass near by, where visitors can relax, down by the old mill stream. Because of the serene and tranquil atmosphere, this area is often used for weddings and outdoor family gatherings. The fascinating charm of the covered bridge makes it a popular spot for pictures. Visitors often have picnics there also.
